And the Echo goes to ...

Alex Christensen (07.04.1967, Hamburg, Germany) is the man behind U96, who was producer and DJ since he was 16. In year 1986 he met Matiz's production team, then he made his 1st music production "Drums In Your House". The year was 1991. Alex Christensen had the idea to present main soundtrack-theme of movies 'Das Boot' in another version, a techno-version, under U96's name.

This extremely dynamic and powerful track with a lot of electronic sounds and underwater effects took German floor entirely while it peaked the charts in many countries: Norway, England, Denmark, Sweden, France, Holland, Belgium and Finland. Interestingly enough, this track was made to US . Das Boot was the first Platin-Maxi Single by this group, it sold at more than 2 million copies worldwide. It went up to position 1 in the German charts, and stayed there for 16 (!!!) weeks. In the beginning of 1992 U96 released their first album called Das Boot (won gold). Another song in this album which is worth mentioning was I Wanna Be A Kennedy, which won gold status, followed by Come 2 Gether / Der Kommandant and Ambient Underworld.

In 1993, U96 released their second album entitled Replugged. It was Alex's response to what MTV-Unplugged series were presenting : a lot of rock while he was introducing a techno-rave style in the dance music. The first hit from this album was Love Sees No Colour. It also won gold. While Das Boot was the only one single to be released in the US, Love Sees No Colour was advertised in the US as : 'The Euro-techno smash finally invades American shores !. As usual the album was produced by AC 16 and Matiz. Both producers were already in demand by many stars like Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin or Jean-Michel Jarre. Other release from Replugged was Night In Motion, which had big success.

In 1994, U96 released some singles: Inside Your Dreams, again was a big hit. Then Club Bizarre released. The title song Club Bizarre was a small revolution. It was mixing the blue-sounded harmony with a strong and sharp sound of Vocoder creating a hybrid of melancholy and trance. By releaseing Love Religion, U96 again score a big hit and reached to the top 5 in charts. It won gold status. In 1995 the album Club Bizarre brought a quite new dimension to U96's music and left a major impression on the new direction Eurodance was taking. Club Bizarre was also featured Movin' and Boot II. This album had a new set of writers and composers. Besides Alex, the music and the texts were also written by Ingo Hauss, Helmut Hoinkis and Hayo Panarinfo. Both 1995 and 1996 were some year of changes for Alex Christensen. First, U96 was joined by Dea-Li (Dorothy Lapi), a beautiful, dark haired woman from Frankfurt with an admixture of Sicilian blood. She was a professional dancer and choreographer (she did choreographies for Captain Jack). Her hobby was painting (Acryl). Dea-Li and Alex met each other for the first time in August 1994. Dea-Li was taking vacation in Mallorca, place unusual for her, because she was taking her vacation most of the time in Africa or India, the places she loves the most.

One night she went to a Japanese club with her friend Marina, who bet with Dea-Li she was not daring to sing in public. She sang Smooth Operator, an original song by Sade. People in the club were so impressed by her performance that she had to encore several times. One of the person in the 'audience' who also asked her to encore was Alex Christensen himself. While she was leaving the studio, she bumped into Alex. In May 24th, 1996 U96 released their fourth album entitled Heaven in which Dea-Li was featured (she participated in the preparation of 4 titles).

Right from the start the title song Heaven, first single to be released, became a hit, which reached number 4 in MM-Chart and won platin status. The speed of the track is 154 BPM. Besides Heaven, the album contained several potential hits such as A Night To Remember (nice male vocal, danceable Euro-Energy sound), Venus In Chains, or Love Generation. In May 1997 U96 released a new single entitled Seven Wonders. Energie (1998), Beweg Dich, Baby (1998) and finally Das Boot 2001 (2000) were released. Instead of new regular album, U96 released Best Of 1991 - 2001 with some new songs from unpublished album Rhythm Of Life.

In year 2002 Alex started to create new songs under his solo project called Alex C., which featured a female vocalist, Yasmin K. (Yass). 2 singles were released on that year which were called: Rhythm Of The Night, and Amigos Forever. We Call It Love was released in 2003 under U96 project as promo single only, plus Alex C. released Angel Of Darkness. U96 returned to the German Top 30 charts in 2006 with their downtempo hit Vorbei which featured the vocals of guest singer Ben, followed by Mr. DJ Put On The Red Light, which also featured the vocals of Das Boot. The new album will release in march 2007 and entitles Out Of Wilhelmsburg. In 2007, Alex also started to release a new song under his solo project called Du Hast Den Schönsten Arsch Der Welt that became #1 hit in the charts. In 2008 he decided to release another single "Doktorspiele" followed by the solo album called Euphorie. Later on, he released 2 other singles in the same year, "Du Bist So Porno" and "Liebe Zu Dritt".
